The top secret WW2 disaster that cost hundreds of US lives (BBC)

In April 1944, American troops took part in a top-secret rehearsal for the D-Day invasion of Normandy, on Slapton Sands in Devon, England. Unfortunately the operation, known as Exercise Tiger, quickly became a disaster. From friendly fire incidents to an ambush from German E-boats, the exercise ended up costing the lives of at least 749 American servicemen.

However, due to the imminent invasion of Normandy, the whole incident was kept in the strictest secrecy and very little was known about what really happened in Exercise Tiger for decades.
